Politics, Sports and More (10/24 - 10/30)
This past week in Wisconsin has probably been one of the wildest, politically, that I have ever seen in my young life. Every day there has been a candidate or a candidate's family member campaigning in the state. I live in Milwaukee and it seems a few times a day the freeway is closed to ship candidates to and from the airport. Here is a list of the campaign stops in Wisconsin since the February primary:
President Bush: 3/30 5/7 5/14 7/14 8/18 9/3 9/24 10/7 10/15 10/20 10/25 10/30
Vice President Cheney: 4/30 8/4 9/9-10 9/28 10/12 10/21 10/27 10/28 10/29
John Kerry: 4/8 5/28 7/2 8/2-3 8/25 9/14-15 9/26-29 10/15 10/25 10/28 10/30
John Edwards: 7/23-24 8/22-23 9/3-4 9/6 10/10 10/25 10/29
And over the next three days, there will be even more stops in the state. It seems like the candidates have taken up residency here. In the 2000 election, Wisconsin was an important swing state for Bush and Gore, but they weren't here nearly as much for this election. Along with the presidential candidates, the race for senate has also become very overwhelming. Tim Michaels and Russ Feingold have taken up the media air waves with Bush and Kerry to the point where sometimes I just won't turn on the TV and radio to get away from the political "pollution".
Sports In Wisconsin This past week in sports has been relatively quite here in Wisconsin.
- The Packers won an exciting one last Sunday to give their fans more confidence here in the state.
- The Brewers released their 2005 schedule. (I was excited to see that the Yankees are coming to town 6/6-8.)
- The Bucks finished their preseason with a .500 record and are preparing for their season opener on this upcoming Wed.
Sports AND Politics
Today the Packers take on the Redskins in D.C. It will be a nail biter because of the pattern that has been established between the Redskins games the week before elections and the outcome of the election. Since 1936 whenever the Redskins win, the current president/party has stayed in office, but when the visiting team looses the opposing candidate has taken office.
I am in a tough position. I am a GB fan (Green Bay and George Bush). I sure hope that both the Pack and GW wins, but If I had to choose based on the curse, I could deal with one Packer loss, but I couldn't deal with Kerry for four years.
